This temple is eleventh out of the 12 jyotirlingas. It is situated at the confluence of the Mandakini and Saraswati rivers in the Garhwal Himalayas. The legend behind this famed location of worship is that after the Mahabharata battle, the Pandavas, to atone for their guilt of killing their relatives asked Lord Shiva to pardon them. They sought high and low till they came to Lord Shiva at the current location of the Kedarnath jyotirlinga.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Kedarnath temple features excellent architecture. Built of unusually massive, heavy, and evenly cut grey stone slabs, it makes one wonder how these heavy slabs were moved and handled in previous generations.
