In a move to ensure the best services of Railways for the general public, last year, Hon'ble Minister of Railways Shri Piyush Goyal had instructed Railways to make available to the general public all saloons except those required for safety/operational needs. Accordingly, many saloons were made available for charter on commercial terms. In addition, he also now surrendered two exclusive saloon coaches/cars that were reserved for him personally, and instructed Railways to facilitate their utilisation for travel of general public on commercial terms.
This has made it possible for the public to travel in luxurious coaches in style and comfort. The maiden tour after Hon’ble Minister’s instructions was by a group of six passengers on board to Katra for visiting the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi in March 2018. So far IRCTC has operated 8 saloon coach tours to various destinations across India like Katra, Gwalior, Jaipur, Howrah, Goa etc.
These saloons can now be attached to most of the trains on the Indian railways network and even on those trains where attaching restrictions exist. Equipped with amenities like air-conditioned bedrooms with attached bathrooms, exclusive dining area along with a well-equipped kitchenette, the saloons provide the best of comforts. They are ideal for those seeking privacy and exclusive time with their family and fellow travellers. Not only that, meetings too can now be hosted while on the move (MICE). Travelling in these majestic saloons takes us to a bygone era and is a once in a lifetime experience.
For ensuring the comfort of passengers, Railways currently provides one AC attendant and one saloon attendant for each saloon. IRCTC is also considering offering the services of a professional cook along with cooking materials. In the days to come IRCTC plans to place a saloon each at its five zones to cater to the requirements from all over India and also make saloon chartering affordable.
Those interested in these saloon tours can contact any IRCTC office across India for booking related queries and facilitation.
